To Market To Market By Billie A Williams © 2006 INTRODUCTION PART I Chapter 2, Part 2 First let’s look at the law of connection. Simply stated this means when someone else talks about your work it carries great impact on the recipient. There is no way that this could be construed as blatant bragging. Think book review, think an article you write for another e-zine, newsletter or magazine (print or online), a part in an anthology or an introduction in another author’s book—if someone picks up on this, or your “presence” at a chat how congenial and intelligent you are and talks about this to their friends – this is connection, this is advertising you don’t pay for but it pays huge dividends. Connection, connection, connection. Somewhere it said that every person know at least ten other people. Think of it. If ten people tell ten friends, who each tell ten others—the avalanche affect could be phenomenal and always better because it’s someone else praising you or your work. Work on yourself to be a presence a good to now, good to have around author/person. Keep in mind, be true to yourself. The most powerful impact comes as a direct result of someone discovering your talent on their own. Law number two – The Law of Status. It goes without saying, the higher the status of the person, organization or institution promoting you, the more powerful the impact. This says seek out professional organizations that can boost your career. Become an active participant. Become an expert at some facet of your career. Perhaps some of the research you did for one of your books makes you an expert on a subject. Maybe it’s your hobby that garners you expert status. Whatever it is, use it to your best advantage. Actively pursue opportunities to use that expertise to help other. Work your way up. You will be noticed. Never miss an opportunity to help another and word of you will spread like a wild fire until those at the top are touting your praise. “The thin line between modesty and good self-promotion is a fine one. It is important to be proud of your accomplishments and promote yourself but at the same time remain humble and earn [emphasis mine]not seek, the respect of others…” “…It is not necessarily what you say, but how, why and to whom you say it that makes the difference. Master this concept.” Bo Bennett, Year to Success www.year2success.com Review and Exercise Chapter 2 1. What is the difference between being a blatant bragger and being asked to tell what you know? 2. What can you do to get the word out about you and your books besides bragging to everyone who will listen? 3. Choose three things you can do this week to get your name out there from those we talked about in chapter two. Write them in your calendar and do them. |
